Chapter Eight

“Hello?”

“Hey, Dad,” I said into the phone as I laid on the bed I shared with Luca.

There’s a rustling around on the other end of the phone like he’s moving. “How’s my little girl doing?”

Happiness filled me at his words. “Good. Really good.”

“I’m happy for ya, baby girl.”

“Dad, I’ve called Howls for the past few weeks, and every time I ask about my schedule, they tell me I don’t have one.” This had been bothering me for a while now, and my wishful thinking had come into play that my father was just giving me time to get settled in my new life. That wasn’t the case. As time passed, I got the distinct impression I was being pushed out.

He sighed heavy. “It’s best if you don’t work there, and I got all the books handled.”

“Dad!” I was in complete shock that I popped up from the bed and began pacing the room.

“You have a new family, and you need to concentrate on them. That’s what a mate does, Caleigh. They leave their life behind and join the other pack, doing jobs for them. You know this.”

“So, you’re going to cut me out?”

“Out of our lives? No. Never. As for the business, it’s best this way. And Caleigh, you know it.”

My heart hurt. This was the severance I was terrified of, because of the bargain. My family had said they’d take me back, but would they really after this? Unfortunately, there wasn’t anything I could do about it.

“Yeah. How’s Wolf coming along?”

“Good. We’re opening next week. Everything is great, Caleigh.” Even though my heart hurt, happiness filled me at knowing I had helped my family. That I was able to fix the problems and let them live easy.

“I’m happy for ya, Dad.” A lump caught in my throat, and I cleared it. “Can you tell everyone I said hi?”

“Absolutely. You’ll have to come over for dinner sometime.”

The lump grew. “Yeah, I’d like that.”

“Gotta run now.”

“Bye, Dad. Love you.”

“Love you, too.” He disconnected the phone, and I swiped mine off, tossing it to the bed.

My heart felt heavy, and it took everything I had not to let the sadness overtake me. My family was moving on, but I hadn’t given them any other choice. Doing what’s best sometimes sucked.

Even worse, in the weeks since I had first slept with Luca, the connection was so much stronger. I swore it’d only get stronger by the day.
